Organizing our spices in our kitchen has been something on our to do list forever. I will admit that I kept putting this on the back burner because I thought it would be so time consuming. I was pleasantly surprised it was a quick and easy process. I wanted our spices more organized and easy to use rather than moving bottles around in the cabinet every time we are cooking. Now it was just time to figure out a design and something functional for both of us.
That’s when I decided I wanted to do a spice drawer instead of the usual cabinet. I knew this would be the most functional to have the drawer closest to the stove. So today I am going to take you through my process of organization to bring my vision together.
For starters can you believe how many styles of spice jars there are? Too many I can tell you now. With our modern style kitchen I knew that I wanted to have clean lines and glass jars were the best quality. Since our kitchen has gold accents I did not want to go with the traditional chrome jars. So I began searching for the perfect glass jars with gold lids. BAM! I found them at neatmethod.com and have them linked here. The color was perfect and the size of the jars were exactly what we needed. Something small and lightweight that would not take up much space in the drawer. They are priced at $32 for a set of 10 in which I originally purchased 2 sets but realized that I needed at least one more to fill our space.
Because I wanted a clean look I decided to opt for an acrylic spice drawer organizer. So off to searching Amazon it was. Amazon is definitely one of my favorite places to shop for our home. The prices are unmatched for sure! Now, I am a firm believer in reading plenty of reviews before making a decision. Therefore it took some time before settling on the best option for a drawer organizer. A little tip, focus on the quality of the reviews verse the amount of reviews left. I settled on this 4 tier expandable spice rack tray by FEMELI Store. I have them linked here. This pack came with 2 sets that fit perfectly in our drawer.
Now there are two items that are very important to finish this project. The spice funnel and LABELS. I mean what is kitchen organization without labels. I knew that I wanted labels that were gold and would match our jars perfectly. Did I tell you how much I love Amazon? I was able to find these beautiful minimalistic gold labels with about 140 spices. I have them linked here. This was perfect to tie my vision together. As for the spice strainer, I picked one up at my local Container Store as it was only about $6. I’ll link it here however these can be purchased at your local grocery store also.
But are y’all ready to see what our cabinet looked like before?
Definitely nothing organized about it lol We also shared these cabinets with our dinnerware and needed more space for them as we have so many. This change truly added so much space for our dinnerware sets. It also forced us to clear out a “Junk Drawer” in our kitchen island. This was for the best hands down.
HOW DO YOU BENEFIT FROM ORGANIZING SPICE JARS
- Less clutter in the cabinet.
- Easier access to items so you can find what you need.
- More visability so you do not overspend on what you have already.
- Allows you to spend less on spices you do not use often.
I won’t lie, by organizing our spices I realized there were at least 3 sets of duplicate spices in the cabinet… how much Thyme does one person need lol I am embarrassed to say how many spices I threw away that were expired taking up space in the cabinet as well. YIKES…
Once I cleaned out the “Junk Drawer” the next thing to do was to move the cooking utensils, that were in the drawer next to the stove, to their new home in the kitchen island. At this point I realized that we became hoarders with unnecessary paper documents.
Now it is time to empty and clean the cabinet before we start prepping the jars. You can place all your new jars on the counter making them easy to fill. Since you have your spices out of the cabinet you can start labeling your new jars. I knew that I wanted our spice drawer to be in alphabetical order. For us, this is the easiest way to view our spices. By having the spices on the counter you can easily see all the spices you have which make labeling the new jars that much easier.
TIME TO FILL IT UP!
Fill it up fill it up. Watch it all fall out. This describes something of what you may experience haha. Accidents do happen so keep a wet dish cloth nearby for messes. This was the fun part for me. Not sure if it was because the project was almost finished or filling the jars were therapeutic lol.
LOAD IT UP
It is time to place your spice organizer in the drawer and put your spices in alphabetical order. The expandable drawer were very easy to use. They each overlapped each other and fit perfectly in our drawer measuring 26 inch wide. I was able to fit 8 jars per row for a total of 3 rows.
Here is the final look!
